Whether it’s the quick reset of Nandi Hills or the immersive escape to Goa.These routes have been my savior from city burnouts more often than I’d like to admit. There’s something about hitting the open road that simplifies life – if only for a weekend. The hum of the engine, the changing horizon, and the anticipation of the next bend gives you a meditative state nothing else can.

1. Nandi Hills

nandi hills

Just 61 kilometers from Bangalore’s urban jungle lies Nandi Hills. It’s like many parts of Karnataka, where you can suddenly find yourself in a world so vastly distinct from what you’ve left behind. I have made this trip so many times, and I can vouch that watching the sunrise from the slopes of Nandi Hills is magic. The journey up is a significant part of the adventure – hairpin bends provide spectacular growing views of the Deccan Plateau below. Time it right (we’re talking 5 AM arrival), and and watch the sun rise in its morning routine, with the first golden rays piercing through the cotton-wool of clouds, encasing each valley. The Tipu Sultan Fort is an interesting piece of 18th century history with thick stone walls and colourful carvings which have survived the test of time. Don’t forget the Nandeeshwara Temple with its relaxing atmosphere created by the sound of chants in the cool air, and, of course, the smell of freshly picked flowers!

Pro-tip: Go on weekdays when there is lessuring crowds and enjoy the freshest and crispiest dosa breakfast from the local dosa stall near the parking lot with a view.

2. Coorg

coorg

The drive from Bangalore to Coorg is a sensory awakening—concrete fades into emerald coffee estates, and the air fills with the rich aroma of roasting beans. Abbey Falls roars through lush foliage, while Raja’s Seat offers sunset views over endless blue ridges. Adventurous souls brave the rugged jeep track to Mandalpatti for sunrise panoramas, while Dubare’s elephants provide humbling encounters. Homestays serve steaming cups of estate-grown coffee alongside spicy Kodava pork curry, their warmth making every visitor feel at home.

Coorg doesn’t just welcome you—it slows you down. Mornings begin with mist drifting over plantations, afternoons invite leisurely spice-farm visits, and evenings end with stories shared over homemade wine. It’s a place where time bends, stress dissolves, and the mountains quietly work their magic. By the journey’s end, you leave carrying more than just coffee and honey—you take home Coorg’s lingering calm, a reminder that tranquility is always just a road trip away.

3. Ooty

ooty

There’s a reason Ooty has long been one of the crown jewels in the ranks of South Indian hill stations. As you drive up the mountain and negotiate the 36 hairpin bends of the Nilgiri Hills, seeing the air temperature drop, the verdure unfold into a humid misty landscape, and recognizing you are standing at the threshold of a 2,240-meter-high paradise that has captivated travelers for decades—you will begin to understand. The drive from Bangalore is rewarding in its own right—even if it does take you six hours to make the journey. There’s something truly enchanting about the tea estates huge green carpets of emerald color unfurled beside you, the roadside stalls selling fresh avocados and homemade chocolates, and the first view of Doddabetta Peak with sweeping views only minutes away.

It is not just about the toy train (and yes, riding atop a century-old steam locomotive through tunnels of rhododendrons is a magical experience). It is waking up to the smell of eucalyptus at the botanical gardens, with the waxy-leafed, 20-million-year-old fossilized tree towering silently over the natural arboretum. It is being taken out on a boat on the lake as evening settles in, enjoying the mist rolling in over the water, and glancing at colonial charm buildings of leisure (that also have not changed from the time the British settled in Ooty). For families, the chocolate factories and strawberry farms are pure joy; for trekkers, the trails to Mukurthi National Park reveal shola forests untouched by time. Pro tip from my last monsoon visit: Pack warm – when Ooty’s famous “mists” arrive, they don’t just cool you down, they transport you to another world.

Distance from Bangalore: 270 km | 6 hrs approx.

4. Pondicherry

Pondicherry

There’s nowhere in India quite like Pondicherry – a place where you can breakfast on flaky croissants, lunch on fiery Chettinad curry, and dine on Mediterranean seafood as bicycles clatter past pastel-colored French villas. The 6-hour coastal drive from Bangalore gradually prepares you for this cultural cocktail, with roadside coconut stalls giving way to bougainvillea-draped colonial facades. I’ll never forget my first sunrise at Rock Beach, watching fishermen haul in their catch as yoga practitioners salute the sun – this is Pondicherry’s magic in a single frame.

The French Quarter’s grid-patterned streets (rue this, rue that) feel plucked from Provence, until a vibrant Ganesha mural or the scent of masala chai reminds you you’re still in India. At Auroville’s Matrimandir, I once spent hours mesmerized by the golden dome’s play of light – this experimental township continues to redefine spirituality. But Pondicherry’s real charm? Those hidden courtyards where conversations flow as freely as the wine – try the rum-soaked fruit cake at Baker Street, or the seafood platter at Le Dupleix’s candlelit verandah. And here’s a secret most miss: the best French toast in town isn’t at a fancy café, but at a tiny bakery run by a fourth-generation Tamil-French baker near the cathedral.

5. Goa

goa

Let’s settle this – Goa isn’t just a destination, it’s a state of mind. That moment when your Bangalore-Goa road trip hits the Ankola stretch and you roll down windows to smell the first salty tang of Arabian Sea air? Pure magic. Over fifteen years of Goa trips have taught me this: the real Goa lives in its contradictions. It’s crumbling Portuguese mansions standing proud beside psychedelic flea markets. It’s ancient fish curry recipes served in neon-lit shacks. It’s the susegad (laidback) philosophy that somehow coexists with India’s wildest nightlife.

The beaches? Each has a personality. Palolem’s crescent moon bay cradles you in hammock-swinging serenity, while Vagator’s red cliffs pulse with trance beats. But my heart belongs to the hidden ones – like Galgibaga, where Olive Ridley turtles nest undisturbed. The food scene tells Goa’s history: Portuguese-era pork vindaloo, Catholic-style sorpotel, Hindu Goan fish thalis, and now a thriving global cuisine scene (try the Scandinavian café in Assagao). Nightlife ranges from silent disco parties on Morjim beach to century-old taverns where feni (cashew liquor) flows as freely as Konkani folk songs. And here’s an insider truth – Goa’s real charm reveals itself when you stay long enough to see monsoon storms paint the chapels brilliant white against charcoal skies, or when you befriend a local fisherman who shows you secret islands only accessible at low tide.
